About the Award
Dr. Dewey, who has spent his life in the field of education was president of the board from 1989-2000. During that time, the foundation underwent significant change in its board make-up and it's mission within the community. The resulting changes have made the Gifford Foundation an advocate for excellence in our community, particularly in areas related to the development of our youth.
In gratitude for Dr. Dewey's vision and efforts, and to honor those who exemplify the foundation's vision for the creation of a positive learning environment for our children, the RFD Excellence in Teaching award is given annually to an educational institution that reflects the following:
- A meaningful, consistent and direct program of mutual self respect among teachers, administration, parents and students.
- The creation of an environment that fosters learning and communication among a diverse student body.
- An active parent involvement policy that allows parents to participate in the educational decisions regarding their children.
- A commitment on the part of the administrative body to provide all necessary tools for teachers to reach their full potential in the classroom.
- A commitment to provide a safe, healthy and non-threatening environment where children are valued for their special talents and abilities.
