THE FACTS
The Gifford Foundation made a $25,000 grant to Syracuse Stage in 1997, to help fund the production of A Christmas Carol and support outreach to youth through the arts. The grant helped underwrite student performances through which 6,000 students from 28 school districts were able to attend a performance of the Charles Dickens classic.
In 1957, $17,000 bought a great deal, when the newly constructed Shonnard Street Boy's Club was fully equipped and furnished with Gifford funds. Now known as the Boys and Girls Club of Syracuse, it operates three facilities. During the last 40 years the foundation has given 1.2 million in grants to youth organizations.
The Gifford Foundation made a $12,000 grant to the Syracuse City School District to purchase uniforms for the Frazer School students. The dress code relieved the pressure to dress in the latest styles or in a gang-related manner. Through The Gifford Foundation grant, these bright, caring children are now "dressed for the job at hand" and are better able to understand that education is not a lesure activity, but the path to a more successful future.
The Gifford Foundation supports a broad spectrum of community service organizations in the Syracuse area. At the Samaritan Center, in interfaith program that provides hot meals to people in need, a $2,500 grant for food provided one of life's most fundamental needs to those less fortunate.
