Did the democratic sweep, in this years election empower or sedate Black Syracusan's? Well, it won't be long before the honeymoon is over for all of the new electees. The city has alot of pressing issues like the southside sewage treatment plant and budget issues for the city and school district. We will see if the black community will feel the majorty of the pain and suffering when it's all said and done.

West African Eye Foundation

The Syracuse group hopes to set up the first eye bank in West Africa, where more than 100 million people live. There are only 75 eye doctors for that population compared with 30 or 40 eye doctors for people in the Syracuse area alone.

Lawsuits Seek Reparations for Slavery

Three federal lawsuits seeking unspecified reparations for the 35 million descendants of African slaves were filed Tuesday against the Aetna insurance company, the FleetBoston financial services group and railroad giant CSX.

The lawsuits also claim that as many as 1,000 unidentified corporations may have profited from slavery and sometimes helped it continue in the United States between 1619 and 1865.

Cayuga County considers boycott of HSBC

Because of the boyscouts policy on homosexuality, Cayuga Co wants to follow several churches that decided to withdraw funds and close accounts with HSBC. The bank would not renew the organizations lease within there building.

Three-cent postage rate increase approved

Americans will be paying an additional 3 cents to mail a letter this summer. The approval means a first-class stamp will rise 3 cents to 37 cents, there will be a 2-cent boost in post cards to 23 cents, and most other mail charges will also rise.


People of color have higher cancer death rates

The study’s findings, published in the March 6 edition of The Journal of the National Cancer Institute, show that Whites are more likely to get more aggressive treatment for colon, prostate and breast cancers, while people of color do not.
